Lithuanian Psychological Association is the main national psychological organization. Its history started in 1958, when the Lithuanian section in the Psychological Association of the Soviet Union was formed. The main body of the Lithuanian psychologists at that time was made of the senior generation of professional psychologists. The leader of them was Prof.A.Gučas. Namely on his initiative in 1960 Lithuanian psychologists started to organize conferences of the Baltic.
In the late eighties Lithuania began its struggle for independence. Psychologists were among the first to separate from the "center". In the autumn of 1988, they withdrew from the Psychological Association of the Soviet Union and in January 1988, the independent Lithuanian Psychological Association (LPA) was founded with more than 400 members.
The main purposes of the LPA are to unite psychologists in their professional activities and support their interests, to organize and coordinate the quality of psychological help, to ensure the raising of psychologists qualification, to co-ordinate the approbation and application of psychodiagnostic methods, to organize seminars and conferences, to keep in touch with the international psychological community, to promote the image of professional psychology in the eyes of the public.
The LPA is currently preparing a law of Psychological services and licensing regulations for applied psychologists.
Since 1997 the LPA is the member of the European Federation of Professional Psychological Associations (EFPPA), since 2000 - the member of the International Union of Psychological Sciences (IUPsyS).
